Shambhala Day marks the beginning of the New Year and represents one of the most important traditions of Shambhala Buddhism. The morning includes an address by Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche.

Based on the traditional Tibetan New Year’s celebration of Losar, the day is calculated astrologically according to the Tibetan lunar calendar and changes every year to coincide with the annual lunar cycles.

The Year of the Earth Dog welcomes qualities of loyalty, integrity, joy, and generosity. It is also a time when we will gather together to enjoy traditions of our warrior culture, receive direction and teachings from Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche, and celebrate the beginning of a new year as a global community.

Shambhala Day is a time for us to express the wealth and richness of our spiritual and cultural heritage through feasting, conviviality, elegance, and pomp. As is customary, Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche addresses the worldwide Shambhala community through an online hook-up, which includes centers and groups from six continents and over thirty countries around the world.

Our annual holidays mark the rhythm of our shared experience and culture and provide the opportunity for us to join together. Shambhala Day is particularly associated with reflecting upon the year that has passed and setting our intentions for the future.

This is also the time when members of the San Francisco Shambhala community are encouraged to make a financial donation in order to help support the activities of our center and the worldwide mandala.
